GVMS explained,GMRs made simple

Every commercial vehicle moving between the EU and Great Britain needs a Goods Movement Reference before it travels. Bounty Freight creates GMRs and attaches your declarations for you, both ways, at every RORO port.

The basics

What GVMS means for your vehicles

What is a GMR?

A Goods Movement Reference (GMR) is the record every commercial vehicle operator must create in the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) before crossing between the EU and Great Britain. Your declarations are attached to the GMR, so border systems know that the freight on the vehicle is cleared.

When do you need one?

A GMR is needed for most RORO movements between the EU and GB, including Dover, Eurotunnel, Harwich, Hull and Immingham. The GMR must be in place before the vehicle boards, and it must reference the correct declarations for every load on board.

What goes into a GMR?

The GMR ties together the vehicle registration, the route, and the references for each movement: import declarations, export declarations, or transit documents such as a T1. One mistake, like an attached declaration that is not yet lodged, can turn the GMR amber or red and stop the vehicle at the frontier.

Amber and red routes

If a GMR comes back amber, the driver must report to a border control post or inland facility for checks. A red GMR means customs intervention is required before movement. Getting declarations and references right the first time is what keeps vehicles on the green route.

Our GVMS service

How Bounty Freight helps

We create the GMR for you

Send us the load details and we build the GMR, attach the correct declaration references and confirm everything is green before your driver travels.

Declarations attached correctly

We lodge the underlying import, export or transit declarations first, then attach them to the GMR, so the references line up and the vehicle stays on the green route.

Out of hours support

Our 24-hour out-of-hours service means help is available any day of the week when a crossing does not go to plan, including evenings and weekends.
