IPAFFS · Import of Products, Animals, Food and Feed

IPAFFS explained,notifications handled

Products of animal origin, animal by-products and high-risk feed must be pre-notified through IPAFFS before they arrive in Great Britain. Bounty Freight creates the notifications and the matching customs declarations for you.

The basics

What IPAFFS means for your goods

What is IPAFFS?

IPAFFS is the Import of Products, Animals, Food and Feed System. It is where pre-notifications are created for consignments of products of animal origin (POAO), animal by-products and high-risk food and feed not of animal origin, before they arrive in Great Britain from the EU and the rest of the world.

What needs pre-notifying?

Meat, dairy, fish, eggs, honey, animal by-products and certain high-risk feed and food products all need an IPAFFS notification. If your container or trailer contains any of these, the notification must be in place before arrival.

The four-hour rule

For imports from the EU, IPAFFS pre-notifications must be created at least four hours before arrival. For imports from the rest of the world the notification is needed while the goods are in transit. A late or missing notification can leave the consignment waiting at the border control post.

What happens at the border

Based on the risk category, the consignment may be routed for documentary or physical checks at a border control post. The health certificate and the commercial documents must match the notification exactly, or the goods can be held or even re-exported.

Our IPAFFS service

How Bounty Freight helps

We create the notification

Send us the health certificate and commercial paperwork and we create the IPAFFS notification correctly and on time, at least four hours before arrival for EU loads.

Full import clearance alongside

We lodge the customs import declaration through CDS at the same time, so customs release and sanitary checks line up and the goods move as soon as they are allowed to.

Advice on certificates

Not sure whether your goods need an IPAFFS notification or which health certificate applies? Our team gives free, impartial advice based on years of handling food and POAO consignments.
